I'm going to repeat myself...
It's simple, don't award points for time spent in battle.
This game is already holding the hands of players who aren't playing by awarding them passive SP for simply existing. Giving even more points for time spent in battle is simply redundant. The only difference between the two types of passive SP is that one of them consumes more electricity.
However, someone brought up this point:
Quote:This seems like the solution at face value, but then you take into account folks like dropship pilots that go 0/0 or players new at the game that get curb stomped with a 0/8 and the solution becomes less elegant.
The solution to what? To AFK farming or bad players not getting war points? It's obviously the latter.
Why should new players expect to immediately start dominating if they are that bad? Have bad gear? And are clueless?
Why should dropship pilots expect anything else? They're dropship pilots, they're not fighter pilots, they're not assault dropship pilots... yet... Right now the gunners are the ones who should be getting the kills, not the pilots, they get assists, but AV is overpowered and the turrets are junk anyways so that's a problem with those things, not the fact that WP are earned for time in battle.
If people are so worried about these bad players, why not award points to players for other things or for at least trying? Why not just go all passive?
Oh yeah.. That's right. This is New Eden, a hyper capitalist world and in a capitalist world, it's about survival of the fittest. Who gets hired and who gets fired is all about time spent getting experience and building up a resume. This is a game of planetary conquest, where players must invest both time and effot to develop their armies of players. This isn't a game that's just about shooting people or twitch reflexes... To me, it's a game about managing people and organizing. Switching to all passive would make players just make tons of alternate accounts and then in a few months, people would whine that the experience is watered down because they cheated doing that. Then people would start arguing that we should get rid of SP altogether or that Sony should charge people for PSN accounts, then people would complain that it was pay to win... It will go on forever and ever...
It's become obvious that bad players depend on this mechanic far more than the good players...
So why not create an elegant solution to the fact that these players who aren't getting rewards for their actions rather than a system that awards people for simply being in battle? Why not design this system to help new players learn how to play and encourage them to play for most points in game modes like Skirmish?
Let's say a guy is clueless... And he dies standing on alpha and he gets 10 points for dying there.
GAME SAYS: "+10 points for Defending A!"
JERRY SAYS: ""Oh! I got points? I wonder what for... Hmmm... I think I have to defend that place..."
Can you see where I'm going with this?
There is so much that players can do already and there are so many ways players contribute, but players don't get points for it. I believe this will encourage players to play as a team, play in different ways, and it'll help people going negative feel like they've contributed so they won't be inclined to red-line snipe as much, I think people like these things and it definitely shows in other games, although they personally annoy me:
Alternative ways players can earn war points:
- Awarding points for damage inflicted in a kill, rather than kills or assists.
- Killing a player who is hacking an objective.
- Dying on an objective.
- Players spawning on a logistics dropship.
- Points for transporting other players
Feel free to make suggestions so I can add it to the list!
Maybe CCP will grab a few of your ideas and implement them... |

You clearly didn't read and understand what I wrote... Going all passive would pretty much defeat the unique premise of the game and create new problems...
If anything, it should be all active in my opinion. |
